Rose of Sharon (Cistus ladanifer)
– Rose of Sharon,
also known as rock rose or sun
rose, is a very fragrant, hardy evergreen shrub. It
has sticky green leaves and large, papery flowers with a maroon-red
spot at the base of each petal. Rose of
Sharon grows about 6 feet (2 meters)
tall and almost as wide.
History: Cistus
ladanifer has a sticky,
resinous, fragrant substance covering its leaves and stems. The
substance is called labdanum and has been
used since antiquity. Rose of Sharon is
mentioned in the Love book of the Bible, the Song of Solomon.
Rich
in: The principal
constituents of the Rose of Sharon are sesquiterpene alcohols:
viridiflorol and
globulol; diterpene alcohol: 15-nor-labdan-8-ol; ambrox; monoterpenes;
and
ketones.
External
use: The
Rose of Sharon
essential oil is
one of the most powerful and potent essential oils. It has regenerative,
restorative, refreshing, stimulating, fortifying, warming, detoxifying, and antiseptic properties. It
aids meditation, boosts
the immune
system, helps regenerate
cells, calms the nerves, relieves insomnia, and
enhances emotional
well-being. Apply
a few drops of the oil on the
palms of your hands. Rub your hands together, cup your nose and mouth,
and
inhale. Avoid the eyes! You may rub a few drops of the oil
into the
soles of your feet or add about 10-15 drops to your bath water.
Mix the drops of the essential oil with milk
and then add to your bath water. (Essential oil mixes well with milk.
It does not mix with water and would thus, if
not mixed with milk, be left floating on top of the bath water.)
For an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle effect, mix one
drop of the oil in your favourite night cream right before application.
